Background of the Study
Network security policies are fundamental to protecting digital resources in any organization, especially in universities, where sensitive data such as student records, research findings, and financial information is regularly transmitted and stored. The Federal University, Dutse (FUD), located in Jigawa State, is no exception, as it faces increasing threats from cybercriminals and unauthorized access (Aliyu et al., 2024). An effective network security policy is designed to safeguard against these threats by outlining procedures for securing university networks, identifying potential vulnerabilities, and providing guidelines for staff and students on safe computing practices.
Despite the growing need for robust network security, many Nigerian universities still lack comprehensive or up-to-date security policies, leading to increased susceptibility to cyberattacks (Sani & Oyediran, 2023). Network security policies must be regularly updated to address emerging threats such as phishing, ransomware, and insider attacks. FUD, like many universities, may benefit from a critical evaluation of its existing policies to identify gaps and weaknesses and propose improvements that would enhance overall security.
This study aims to evaluate the current network security policies at FUD, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and provide recommendations for improving the university’s approach to cybersecurity.
Statement of the Problem
The Federal University, Dutse, is exposed to cybersecurity risks due to the lack of comprehensive, regularly updated network security policies. While the university has some security measures in place, there is no detailed evaluation of the effectiveness of these measures in mitigating cyber threats. The absence of clear and enforceable security policies leaves FUD vulnerable to data breaches, unauthorized access, and cyberattacks, which could jeopardize the integrity of academic and administrative data and undermine the university’s operations.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of the current network security policies at the Federal University, Dutse.
To identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses in FUD's network security practices.
To propose improvements to the university’s network security policies to enhance protection against cyber threats.
Research Questions
How effective are the current network security policies at Federal University, Dutse, in protecting against cyber threats?
What are the key vulnerabilities in the existing network security policies at FUD?
What changes or improvements can be made to enhance the university’s network security posture?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the evaluation of the network security policies implemented at the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State. It will primarily assess the policies related to internet usage, access control, and data security. The study may be limited by access to institutional policy documents, the willingness of stakeholders to share information, and the time frame for conducting a thorough evaluation.
